The US Air Force scrambled an F-16 to investigate an unidentified civilian plane spotted over President Donald Trump’s campaign event in Arizona, launching flares to ward off the craft, which breached a temporary no-fly zone.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) acknowledged the incident in a pair of tweets on Wednesday afternoon, not long after the illicit flyover was caught on film during the Trump rally.

“At approx. [2pm] NORAD F-16 aircraft investigated a general aviation aircraft that was not in communication with [air traffic control] and entered the Temporary Flight Restriction area surrounding Bullhead City, AZ without proper clearance,” the agency said.

The violating aircraft was non-responsive to initial intercept procedures, but established radio communications after NORAD aircraft deployed signal flares. The aircraft was escorted out of the restricted area by the NORAD aircraft without further incident.

While the brief encounter put the military on red alert, President Trump appeared to believe the incident was deliberate, showing no concern that he might be in danger while musing that the plane was “trying to show off to the president.”

“Look at that! Look, look, look! They gave the president a little display. How about that. I wonder if the fake news caught that… they never want to show anything that’s good,” Trump told the crowd, which erupted into chants of “USA! USA!”
